BoardingArea Homepage Feed Overview

BoardingArea is an RSS feed aggregator that uses pre-set categories to organize posts into the feed. That means BoardingArea pulls in your posts from your blog's RSS feed.

Every English-language post goes to the BoardingArea homepage feed. Posts are fetched every ~7 minutes when the feed refreshes.

Non-English language posts are fed into the International region their blog focuses on.

Categories

On the BoardingArea homepage, there are categories listed at the top: Trip Reports, Deals, Hotel Reviews, Lounge Reviews, Flight Reviews, Family Travel, Credit Cards, Videos, and Podcasts. These categories were chosen for the homepage because they're popular enough network-wide to fill with pretty consistent updates.

A matching Category on your blog will be pulled into the same Category on BoardingArea. For example, if I marked a post on my blog with the Trip Report category, it would end up on the Trip Report category on the BoardingArea homepage.

NOTE: No matter what category you choose for your posts, they WILL all show up on the main feed.

To avoid clogging up the category feeds with irrelevant and duplicate posts it is important to follow these rules of thumb:

  • Mark 1-3 categories for your post.

  • Do not mark a category on a post if it does not apply to the category.

The categories provide some additional value to readers but don't drive massive amounts of traffic from BoardingArea to blogs. The majority of posts written don't end up in the Categories on BoardingArea - excluding the International sections as all specific region blogs end up there. Instead, the majority of posts end up on the main homepage feed.

Search

If readers on BoardingArea use the search function, they can still find topics and have your posts pop up no matter the category.

Sweeping/Refreshing the Feed

Posts get swept about every 7 days from the feed if the category is full. A category becomes full when it has 300 posts within it. There is no exact time for posts to be swept because there's also about a 7-minute swing of when posts are actually fetched (with subtle variance depending on when it gets to your blog's feed specifically).

Exception: Most of the category pages skip the post sweep every 7 days because of a lack of content in those categories.

Updating A Post

Sometimes you will have an update relevant to an older post you have written. You may be tempted to update the older post with the information, but this will not place the updated post into the BoardingArea feed.

Instead of updating a current post, we suggest you write a new post with updated information and link back to the older post. This will allow your new post to show up in the BoardingArea feed. Following this process also creates an internal link that tells Google that the old page is important. Ultimately increasing your SEO.

Removing A Post

If for any reason you need to remove a post from the BoardingArea feed, please reach out to us with the title of the post, so we can remove it manually.
