Organizing your blog posts

The taxonomy of your blog helps to organize posts using categories and tags. Site organization is up to you and what you want to focus on writing about.

BoardingArea uses RSS feeds to map posts using categories to the BoardingArea Homepage (more info).

Categories

Categories are used for the broad grouping of post topics. The blog’s categories are used to map the posts on BoardingArea’s Topics menu found at the top of the website (see image below) and our app.

Categories that will map to BoardingArea’s Topics menu on the website and app include:

  • Trip Reports (Trip Reports or Trip Report)

  • Deals (Deals or Deal)

  • Hotel Reviews (Hotel Reviews or Hotel Review)

  • Lounge Reviews (Lounge Reviews or Lounge Review)

  • Flight Reviews (Flight Reviews, Flight Review, Airline Reviews, or Airline Review)

  • Family Travel (Family Travel)

  • Travel Tech (Travel Tech)

  • Videos (Videos or Video)

  • Podcasts (Podcasts or Podcast)

  • Credit Cards (Credit Cards or Credit Card)

You should keep to a maximum of 3 categories per post. This prevents duplicate content from being posted on the BoardingArea Topics menu. It also keeps your blog clutter free of dead pages.

Tags

Tags are used to describe blog posts in more detail. Tags are specific to the individual blog. These are not pulled into the BoardingArea Topics menu as categories do. With tags, you want to make sure there are a significant amount of posts that the tag applies to before creating the tag. This will keep your blog from becoming cluttered.

Remove or hide tags that aren't creating any value. Many of the tags are most likely included words in your posts and will still pop up if people look for them on your site via your search bar.

Tags vs. Categories Example

This post from Live and Let’s Fly has two categories: lounge reviews and trip reports, and one tag: Qatar Airways. On BoardingArea, the article will appear on both the menu topics of lounge reviews and trip reports. Since BoardingArea does not have a Qatar Airways category, Qatar Airways is a tag for the Live and Let’s Fly blog’s site to help categorize the post for easy locating on the blog.

Warning: Choose Categories with Care

Sometimes it is difficult to choose which category to check and you may be tempted to check more than 1-3 categories or even select your blog's general category. In doing so, you may map your post to an irrelevant category on the BoardingArea feed.

Take a look at the Family Travel section on BoardingArea:

The 3 posts in the image above have headlines about promotions, bonuses, and point deals but are not specifically about family travel. So why are the posts showing up under Family Travel on the BoardingArea feed? The blogs have selected Family Travel as a category for these posts. If you were a traveler looking for information on family traveling, would these posts be helpful for you? Probably not. These 3 posts would most likely be better categorized as "Deals".

Choosing your post categories with care helps travelers find the posts they are looking for quickly and keeps the feed sub-categories from becoming filled with posts that may not be helpful.
