BoardingPack is a plugin that is installed on all of the blogs on the network. This plugin is exclusive to BoardingArea and is how we send advertising to each blog. But BoardingPack is much more than an advertising plugin! Read on to learn more about its features and how it works.

BoardingPack Plugin Overview

BoardingPack was created to seamlessly connect advertising to blogs on the network. All advertising is explicitly configured for BoardingArea’s niche, points+miles.

Some of the benefits BoardingPack offers are:

  • Implementing advertising to monetize the blog

  • Dynamic functionality updates

  • Auto-updates to all blogs instead of updating individual blogs

  • Additional all-in-one tools: content filter, header/foot scripts, & analytics with custom dimensions

  • Having an all-in-one plug-in prevents site slowdown

BoardingPack advertisements are inserted into each site using the Ad Manager (BoardingPack) widget. Each blog has custom configurations to place the widgets in the best locations to optimize revenue. BoardingPack can add advertising to your blog in the following locations:

  • Top ad: high-yielding ad unit, added below the navigation

  • Sidebar: 3 ad placements - top, middle, bottom

  • Below ad: placed in the footer or below the blog’s content

  • In between or after content: shows up in between blog posts

  • Adhesion ad: floats on top of the blog

  • Video player: needs to be set up uniquely with the Player ID

To fully optimize advertising on your site we recommend having ads in 7 locations:

BoardingPack can be customized in a variety of ways. Some examples are:

  • Ad sizes

  • Add Bing or Google scripts to the Header and Footer

  • Sticky ads that stay at the bottom for mobile and desktop; colors can be changed

  • Mobile and desktop ad density

  • Auto-insertion of ads into articles (I want the ad to repeat after X paragraphs, X amount of words, X amount of content)

  • RSS Feed featured images can be sized

  • Tag management

  • Built-in dynamic logic to make sure ads are placed correctly

BoardingPack Plugin Updates

BoardingPack updates are pushed out to blogs using the WPMU Dev plugin.

Version 2.1.1 Introduction

We've rebuilt the BoardingArea plugin and renamed it BoardingPack. Its goal is to have a multitude of plugins built in that you can turn on as needed. We've been building custom plugins for years for bloggers and this will allow us to put them out for everyone easily.

We've done some other important changes to the plugin under the hood and have a roadmap of many other items.

Tools

Content Filter (Formerly Affiliate Disclosures)

The Affiliate Disclosure section is now called the Content Filter and has its own section on the plugin sidebar. We've changed it so you can now name each filter anything you want and added the ability to make as many as you want but use the same functionality as before. See below how the various sections are connected.

If you had content in your disclosures, they will come over with their current Title. The titles are just names for your convenience. Affiliate codes can work in these boxes now.

How to Use the Content Filter

  1. Inside the WordPress admin sidebar go to BoardingPack -> Content Filter.

2. Scroll to the bottom and create a new filter by clicking the "Add Filter" button.

3. A new Content Filter box will be inserted that has blank fields.

4. Enter the title of your filter (ex: Credit Card Disclosure) in the Title field. Then enter the disclosure you would like to have in the Content field.

5. You can choose to have the disclosure placed before content or after content.

6. You can choose if you would like the disclosure to appear on all posts, all pages, or all posts & pages.

7. Once you have finalized your text and choices, you can click Save Changes.

8. Select OK on the warning that may pop up.

9. The disclosure will now appear according to the settings you have chosen.

If you want to remove a Content Filter, then you will select Remove Filter>Save Changes>OK on the warning. If you want to make changes to a Content Filter, make sure to select Save Changes>OK on the warning.

To selectively display a filter on certain pages, you will want to set the filter's "Display" option to "Select Posts & Pages". Within each post/page edit screen, you will see a meta box (below article content) which will have a check box next to each filter you have created. Simply check the box next to the filter you wish to display for that specific post/page.

Note: If your disclosure has some custom styles, please reach out to help@boardingarea.com and we'll help to update the style to the new Content Filter appropriately.

Find & Replace

We've added a new feature called Find & Replace. This new feature allows you to change things after the page has been rendered. Find & Replace provides a way to change the text to posts without having to edit or update the text one by one. It's non-destructive (not permanent) and doesn't change files or databases. You can have multiple mappings. To undo changes, simply remove the mapping.

Settings

Warning: Before making changes to settings on BoardingPack, please contact help@boardingarea.com to make sure the changes will not break the plugin.

  • BoardingArea Bridge: adds a BoardingArea logo sticky that links back to the homepage. The Bridge does not interfere with adhesion ads and is not required to be turned on.

  • RSS Enclosure & RSS Media: developed to work with MailChimp’s RSS newsletter; automates pulling in featured images based on whether <enclosure> or <media> is used to indicate a featured image in the blog’s RSS feed.

  • Google Analytics: the Google Analytics 4 and Universal Analytics IDs are inserted here for tracking purposes.

  • Custom Dimensions: data that is tracked in Google Analytics for analysis

  • Google Tag Manager: If you have a Google Tag Manager ID, it can be inserted here. Google Tag Manager is like a bucket that keeps all tracking IDs together in one place. Note: Google plans to merge Google Tag Manager with the new GA4 ID, so this field will be removed.

  • Clicky Web Analytics: the Clicky Site ID is inserted here to track analytics

  • Header & Footer Scripts: custom scripts are entered here; including the GA4 tracking script

  • Site ID: the ID for your site that is used in Google Ads Manager

  • Placement ID: Used for Header Bidding and is individually customized for each blog

  • Player ID: The video player advertising ID is placed here. BoardingArea worked with EX.CO to develop the video player advertising (more info).

  • Size Mapping (0px, 768px, 1024px): ads of this size are displayed and each blog’s sizing configurations are unique to accommodate their theme

  • Adhesion Ads: sticky ads at the bottom of the site. The background color can be customized.

  • In-Content Ads: places ads within your post content

    • Label: The default text is 'Continue Reading Below', but this can be customized

    • Exclude (Post)

    • Exclude (Term)

  • In-Content Ads (Mobile, Desktop)

    • Display (All Posts, All Pages, Both): allows you to choose where in-content ads are being displayed

    • Insert In-Content Ads after X paragraphs: default is 3 paragraphs

    • Repeat In-Content Ads Insertion: this allows more than 1 ad to appear in the content

    • Insert In-Content Ads when paragraph(s) contain a minimum of X word(s): This is customized for each blog based on the average amount of writing

    • Insert In-Content Ads when the_content contains a minimum of X word(s): typically left blank

    • Always attempt to insert a minimum of one (1) In-Content Ad: this ensures that if the above settings are not met, an ad is inserted into the content

  • Ads.txt: this has to be checked to meet legal requirements

  • Funding Choices: being phased out due to no longer being used

  • Ad Blog Recovery: being phased out due to no longer being used
