On top of everything happening, we are seeing more and more content creators having their blog post content stolen and published on other websites.

Today we are guiding you through what to do when a third party uses your content without proper authorization.

Disclaimer: This is not legal advice, always consult a lawyer.

Protect Your Intellectual Property: Have A Copyright Notice

You should have a copyright policy in place in order to protect your content legally.

While BoardingArea has included a copyright notice in the footer of your site, it is best to speak with a legal advisor specialized in copyright to create a Terms of Use policy mentioning the implications of using your content without explicit permission. Additionally, you can review this article from WordPress that goes over protecting your content from theft.

You can also add a customized script at the beginning or end of each of your articles to ensure that the link to your original article is reposted automatically when someone lifts your content and puts it up elsewhere.

Once you have a copyright policy in place in your Terms of Use, make sure it is visible on your website to easily let your users know that unauthorized use of your work is a violation of your rights as the creator.

Finding Stolen Content

There are several resources available to help you locate stolen content. Using tracking tools such as Google Alerts and Copyscape can be highly effective in protecting your content and tracking down instances of content theft.

Google Alerts is one of the best and easiest tools for tracking stolen content, allowing users to create alerts for portions of their articles and choose which types of websites to search.

Copyscape is another tool that is particularly helpful for those who publish a lot of content, allowing them to easily identify which sites are reposting their content by typing in their website URLs. In this section, we will discuss how to use both of these tools to track stolen content and protect your original work.

Use Google Alerts

One of the best and simplest tools for tracking stolen content is Google Alerts. You can create alerts for portions of your articles and choose what types of websites should be searched. Then provide your email address so Google can contact you with the results.

For more detailed instructions, review the Create An Alert article.

Use Copyscape

Copyscape is a tool that can be used to find sites that are reposting your content. To use the tool, you simply need to type in your website domain/URL and Copyscape will search the web and identify which sites are reposting your content. This can be particularly helpful for those who publish a lot of content and may not have the time or resources to manually search for instances of content theft.

File A DMCA Complaint with Google Legal Support

You can file a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaint against a site that has stolen your content by using Google Webmaster Tools. Use the instructions found on this site.

This process involves filling out a form that includes information such as the original URL of the content, the URL of the site that has stolen the content, and a statement that the blogger is the copyright owner or authorized to act on their behalf.

Once the form is submitted, Google will review the complaint and take appropriate action, which may include removing the offending content or even banning the site from Google's search engines.

File a DMCA Complain with WordPress

Filing a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaint against a site that has stolen content can also be done using WordPress. WordPress has a DMCA notice template that can be used by bloggers to file a complaint with the site's hosting service or the site owner. Use the instructions found on this site.

You can also access the DMCA notice template, by going to the WordPress dashboard, clicking on the "Tools" menu, and then selecting "Copyright". From there, you can fill out the DMCA notice template with the required information, including the original URL of the content, the URL of the site that has stolen the content, and a statement that the blogger is the copyright owner or authorized to act on their behalf.

Once the form is submitted, the hosting service or site owner will receive the DMCA notice and may take appropriate action to remove the offending content.

Contacting the registrar is normally the quickest way to have the content removed and have the website flagged for copyright infringement. You can check what registrar the site is using by searching for the domain/URL of the site that has stolen your content on Whois. Then, email the registrar to explain the situation including screenshots and/or URL examples of the stolen content.
